Subsistence ledger, 1862 Sept. 1-1863 July 31.

Kept by J.S. Melvin, Capt., Co. H, and Adjutant Commissary of Subsistence, this is a record of the provisioning of the 2nd Virginia Infantry Regiment which, with the 4th, 5th, 27th, and 33rd Virginia Regiments formed the "Stonewall Brigade" of Shenandoah Valley troops (designated 1863 May 30). Includes "Abstract of Disbursements" listing 140 soldiers by name, "Abstract of Provisions," charting rations such as whiskey, coffee, bacon, beef, rice, sugar, and flour, and provisions received "while marching" and at "sundry camps" during the spring of 1863. The ledger tracks the regiment's supplies through the battles of Kernstown, Gaines's Mill, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Stephenson's Depot, and Gettysburg.
